Alessandro Galli received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering and the PhD in Applied Electromagnetics, both from “La Sapienza” University of Rome, Italy. Since 1990, he joined the Department of Electronic Engineering (now Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications, DIET) of “La Sapienza” for his research and educational activities. In 2000 he became Assistant Professor, and in 2002 Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the same University. In 2012 he won the National Scientific Qualification in the sector of Electromagnetics and in 2020 he definitively achieved the relevant role of Full Professor. In his educational activities, he is currently teaching at Sapienza University of Rome the course of “Electromagnetic Fields” (12 CFU) for Electronics Engineering Bachelor Degree, and co-teaching the courses of “Advanced Antenna Engineering” (6 CFU, in English), of “Microwaves” (9 CFU, in English), and of “Engineering Electromagnetics” (6 CFU, in English) for Electronics Engineering and for Communications Engineering Master Degrees.

His scientific interests are focused on topics of theoretical and applied electromagnetics, mainly concerning analysis, design, and test of antennas and of passive components at microwaves, millimeter waves, and terahertz; specific interests are in radiating devices based on leaky waves, dielectric waveguides and resonators, periodic and multilayered printed structures, propagation in complex media, metamaterials and graphene, with related modeling and numerical aspects. Other research areas involve geoelectromagnetics (forward and inverse scattering problems in Ground Penetrating Radar and Time Domain Reflectometry techniques) and microwave plasma heating for alternative energy sources. His research activity included also bioelectromagnetics (modeling of interaction mechanisms of the electromagnetic fields).

Prof. Galli is author of more than three hundred scientific works indexed in the main databases, mostly on journals, books, encyclopaedias, and international conferences. His H-index is 32 and his i10-index is 89 (Google Scholar source). He organized and chaired several convened and special sessions, and was chosen several times as a member of technical program and of prize committees for the main European symposia in the areas of microwaves and antennas. He has been invited to give various academic lectures and seminars for PhD and specialized schools in national and European contexts. He participated to several funded researches in the university frame and in international projects, also in conjunction with public agencies and industries. He is author of a patent for an invention concerning a novel type of microwave antenna. He received various prizes and grants for the research activities, developed both directly and in the frame of the group which he coordinates at the Laboratory of Electromagnetic Fields of DIET. He won the “Barzilai Price” in 1994 for the best scientific work of under-35 researchers at the “10th National Meeting of Electromagnetics”. He was also the recipient of the “Quality Presentation Recognition Award” by the “Microwave Theory and Techniques” (MTT) Society of the “Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering” (IEEE) at the International Microwave Symposium in 1994 and in 1995. Based on a poll among about three hundred attendants to the courses of the “European School of Antennas” (ESoA), in 2017 he has been elected “Best Teacher” with a perfect score in a competition of more than one hundred international speakers.

As regards organization activities, he served in consulting and professional tasks, and assumed several academic management capacities in committees and councils both at Department (DIET) and at Faculty levels (Information Engineering, Computer Science and Statistics). In 2009 he was the Treasurer of the “European Microwave Week” (EuMW), the most important conference event in the electromagnetic area at European level. In 2014 he was the General Co-chair of the EuMW 2014. For the 2010-12 triennium he was elected as the Italian representative of the Board of Directors of the “European Microwave Association” (EuMA), the main European society of electromagnetics, and he was re-elected for the 2013-15 triennium. Since foundation in 2013, he has been the coordinator of the “European Courses on Microwaves” (EuCoM), the first European educational institution on microwaves. He is also a member of the ESoA. He is Associate Editor of the “International Journal of Microwave and Wireless Technologies” by Cambridge University Press and of the “IET Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation” by the Institution of Engineering and Technology; he is also reviewer of the main international journals on microwave and antenna topics. Prof. Galli is a member of the leading national and international scientific societies of applied electromagnetics.
