She developed innovative methodologies for rapid characterization of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and plasmids. She invented the worldwide known and adopted PCR-Based Replicon-Typing (2005, now PBRT-KIT 2.0 produced and commercialized by DIATHEVA S.R.L.), pMLST (2009, curator at the MLST web site at the Oxford Univerity UK) and PlasmidFinder (2014, curator of the database at the Genomic Center for Epidemiology at the Danish Technology University, DK) methods. She was pioneer of bacterial WGS used as a tool for identification of new resistance mechanisms and characterization of high-risk bacterial clones (in 2007, she completed the de novo sequencing of Acinetobacter baumanni strain ACICU genome; in 2014 she discovered a novel mechanism of resistance to tigecyclin; in 2017 she discovered the novel colistin resistance mcr-4 gene).
