Brief Description of my research topics
My lab focuses on investigating at the level of the cell physiology the role of the frontal cortex in various domains of cognition such timing, problem solving strategies, goal, retrospective and prospective memory, decision making, social interaction, magnitudes in the spatial and timing domain that can be summarized in 7 main lines of research:
1) Frontal Pole Cortex: I have published several papers on the Frontal Pole cortex, exploring the representation of behavioral responses analyzing single-neuron activities, correlations, and neural variability. To my knowledge, these are the only ever published neurophysiological studies on this important cortical area because of the difficulty of having access to this area surgically. This area is believed to play a role in supporting unique cognitive abilities of non-human and human primates. There is a homology of the human Frontal Pole cortex only with non-human primates. Our current work continues to study this area in relation to social cognition and fast learning. The last paper published is online in Plos Biology.
2) Social cognition: My interest has expanded to exploring the neural correlates of social interaction and the role of prefrontal and premotor areas in this process. My goal is to understand the mechanisms that underlie the ability to distinguish self from others, predict and monitor others' goals, and investigate how these mechanisms are compromised in conditions such as autism spectrum disorders. We have identified neural correlates of predicting others' behavior in various frontal areas, with the anterior medial prefrontal cortex showing the greatest separation in neural representations between self and others.
3) Interval timing: My laboratory examines the involvement of the prefrontal cortex in encoding stimulus duration and the comparison between durations. We also study the relationship between time and space and the overlap in neural codes between these two magnitudes.
4) Decision making and learning: My research examines decision-making processes from the decision itself to the conversion of that decision into a motor plan in several discrimination and learning tasks. We also study decision making under free-choice conditions to understand the neural activities that influence the selection of one option over another.
5) Timescales: Our recent work has characterized the timescales of intrinsic fluctuations in spiking activity of neurons in different cortical and subcortical areas, and explored how these timescales are predictive of later involvement in spatial memory functions and can define a hierarchy of brain areas.
6) Large scale brain connectivity analysis: Recently we have opened a new line of research using a computational approach to connectivity in mice: In a new line of research, I have started to study the functional connectivity in mice looking for motifs of assemblies of neurons activated in coordinate way, such loops of assemblies of neurons between areas. We have submitted a manuscript and a second is in preparation on all brain connectivity, to investigate the connectivity of the zona incerta, a crucial are that can alleviate Parkinson's symptoms through its electrical stimulation.
7) Mechanisms of interareal communication, examined in terms of functional connectivity and motifs of connectivity. See Londei et al. (2024). Link: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2589004223028389. We are finalizing a manuscript on the analysis of the functional connectivity examining the exchange of coded neural information addressing more than 50 areas of the mouse.

Coordination of a research group and scientific collaborations
The current research group hired with my Grants includes two postdocs: Lorenzo Ferrucci and Francesco Ceccarelli. The group also includes three PhD students: Giulia Arena, Fabrizio Londei, and Leyla Elyasizad (ITN PhD student) and a few undergraduates students.

Scientific collaborations

The laboratory has collaborations with national (Giovanni Pezzulo, Patrizia Fattori, Maurizio Mattia, Ivilin Stoianov, Elena Borra) and internationals scientists (Stefano Fusi, Satoshi Tsujimoto, and Giancarlo La Camera) including the members of the ITN grant consortium (e.g., Thomas Brochier, Demian Battaglia, Bjorg Kilavik, Michael Schmid, and Emmanuel Procyk), and with other scientists of the Department of Physiology of the Sapienza (Stefano Ferraina, Emiliano Brunamonti, Pier Paolo Pani). A part of the ITN project involves conducting common experiments in different cortical and subcortical areas using a variety of methods, including neurophysiological recording, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and optogenetics. The project is in collaboration with numerous research centers in France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, England, and Greece, including the Primate Center in Göttingen, CNRS in Lyon and Marseille, the University of Crete, and the University of Newcastle.

Scientific independence, coordination of a research group, and international collaborations.
My scientific independence is demonstrated by the number of articles I have published as the corresponding author, as well as the major individual grants I have received as PI, including FIRB, ERC consolidator, and PRIN 2019, for a total of 1,581,000 euros. In two cases, the grants were awarded to me individually (FIRB, ERC consolidator) and in one case, I was the PI of a unit within a larger group (PRIN 2019) and coordinator of the Sapienza group in a European ITN project. With these funds, I have been able to support my work in mt Department in multiple ways, including offering fellowships (assegni di ricerca e borse di studio) to members of my research group for the past ten years and currently. I have also ensured my research group operates with full financial and scientific independence, including providing necessary equipment and maintaining the laboratories and animal facilities.
Many past members of my laboratory, including Rossella Falcone (NIH, Bethesda, USA), Rossella Cirillo (University of Parma), Encarni Marcos (Instituto de Neruosciencias, Alicante), Valentina Mione (Oxford, UK), Valeria Fascianelli (Columbia University), Simon Nougaret (CNRS), and Danilo Benozzo (Università di Padova), have continued their careers in Italy or abroad and maintain an active collaboration with the laboratory as part of a larger scientific network.
