Scientific curriculum
The scientific activity relating to the physics and technologies of elementary particles was carried out in the context of the problems that can be explored with:
- electron-positron colliders in the Frascati Laboratories with the MEA apparatus in ADONE in '75-'78 and the KLOE apparatus in DAPHNE '94-'10
- hadron beams on fixed targets in the CERN Laboratories at the PS from '78 to '82 for the study of hadronic systems and with experiments at the SPS for the study of beauty from '83 to '86 and from '87 to '89
- nuclear reactors in Grenoble in '82 for the study of neutron-antineutron oscillations
- sounding balloons: MASS experiment in '86 for the study of antimatter in primary cosmic rays
- MACRO underground observatory in the Gran Sasso Laboratories from '84 to 2000 for the research of magnetic monopoles, gravitational collapses, neutrino oscillations and cosmic ray studies
- proton-proton colliders at 7 + 7 TeV in the CERN Laboratories (at LHC) for the study of violations of CP and of the standard model in LHCb (starting from 2000)
- accelerators for ion therapy (since 2010): proton and carbon of 80 MeV/u (Catania); carbon of 400 MeV/u at GSI (Darmstadt); proton and carbon at CNAO (Pavia); helium, carbon, oxygen at HIT (Heidelberg) in order to study the emission of secondary particles produced in therapeutic treatments.
The applications of particle physics technologies to the treatment of tumors by means of high-energy ion and electron radiotherapy using the flash effect are currently the main research topic.

In the various experiments he often played coordinating roles, in particular of the groups that designed, built, installed and used particle detectors and the electronic devices necessary for their operation.

He is also co-inventor of a patent: (29/01/2013, request RM2013A000050) "Beta radiation probe for the intra-operative identification of tumor residuals"

SCOPUS parameters (november 2022): publications (10 years ) 587; citations (15 years) 34359; h-Index (15 years - no self) 80
