Teaching: Professor of Middle East History, Contemporary History of Islamic Countries, History of Contemporary Europe.
Research topics: Multidenominational societies in the Middle East and North Africa; Modern and contemporary Islamic thought; Mediterranean and Balkan Islam; Relations between Europe and the Arab-Islamic world; Citizenship, democracy and human rights in the Arab-Islamic world.

Partecipazione a società scientifiche: Partecipa alle attività dell’associazione italiana di studi sul Medio Oriente, Sesamo, e a quelle della Associazioni di Studi africani in Italia (ASAI). È membro della Società Italiana per lo Studio della Storia Contemporanea (SISSCO). È stata membro del comitato di redazione della rivista «Il Mestiere di storico» collegata a quest’ultima Società. Nel 1991 Paola Pizzo ha preso parte alla creazione del Gruppo di Ricerca Arabo Cristiana, di cui è attualmente membro consigliere nel Consiglio direttivo.
Awards: The volume Egypt to the Egyptians! Cristiani, Musulmani e idea nazionale (1882-1936), Zamorani, Torino 2003 was awarded the Sissco Prize 2004, in the research monographs section, on the occasion of the annual conference of Sissco (Confini/Grenzen) held in Bolzano in September 2004.
